Lafayette: Surrey Street Bridge Reopens After Emergency Closure

Jul 03, 2018 12:06PM ● By Flint Zerangue, Sr.

The Surrey Street bridge crossing the Vermilion River has reopened after an emergency closure in October of last year.

With repairs and inspections completed, LA DOTD approved the bridge for re-opening. On Tuesday, July 3rd, 2018, city officials were on hand for a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony as the bridge was reopened for traffic.

The total project cost $700,000 which included engineering and construction, testing and inspections. The work included bearing and joint replacement, cleaning and painting of the steel girders and an epoxy-urethane overlay on the deck.

Traffic on both the bridge and the Vermilion River waterway had been stopped since the bridge was deemed unsafe in October 2017.
