Former Apollo 13 Astronaut Speaks With UL Lafayette Mechanical Engineering Students

Sep 26, 2018 05:12PM ● By Flint Zerangue, Sr.

Former NASA astronaut Fred Wallace Haise, Jr. visited Lafayette today to speak with students in UL Lafayette’s Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Haise was one of three crew members aboard the Apollo 13 mission in which the crew returned to Earth safely from an aborted mission to the moon in 1970 after an explosion aboard the craft.

Haise has had an exciting career as a former NASA astronaut, fighter pilot with the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Air Force and test pilot. He is one of only 24 people to have flown to the Moon as Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 13.

Haise shared his story of the Apollo 13 mission and how with the help of the NASA team, he and the crew of Apollo 13 were able to return back to earth safely after a four-day mission that nearly cost them their lives.
