Lafayette firefighters responded to a residential fire on 418 East Cedar Street Wednesday evening after receiving a 911 call reporting a mattress on fire under a carport. When firefighters arrived, the carport was fully involved and the fire was spreading to the attic and interior of the residence.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire, but the home sustained heavy smoke and fire damage.

The occupants were in the process of moving into the home for their first night when they smelled something burning. Upon further investigation, the family noticed a mattress set under the carport was on fire. The occupants quickly exited the dwelling and called 911.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
