LOUISIANA--Without warning, and without explanation, Bayou Steel, headquartered in LaPlace, LA informed some 376 workers Monday morning they were no longer needed, and that the company was closing.

According to reports from St. John the Baptist Parish-President Natalie Robottom, the move was a total shock to parish officials and the community.

The company was founded in 1979 along the Mississippi River in LaPlace where they operated a shop for melting metals and a scrap-processing facility.

It’s unclear exactly when the plant will close and why the decision was made.
