Joe Biden Drops Out of 2024 Presidential Race

Jul 21, 2024 02:35PM ● By Flint Zerangue, Sr.

(Washington D.C.)  President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he will not run for reelection in 2024. Many top Democrats had been asking him to drop out because they didn't think he could beat former President Donald Trump in November.

What's Next for the Democrats?

Vice President Kamala Harris is now the most likely person to take Biden's place as the Democratic nominee. Other possible candidates include California Governor Gavin Newsom, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Biden's Announcement

Biden made his announcement from his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where he has been staying since he tested positive for COVID-19. In his message to the American people, Biden said, "It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. While I wanted to run for reelection, I believe it is best for my party and country for me to step down and focus on my duties as President."

Why Did Biden Drop Out?

Biden struggled to convince many Democrats that he could win against Trump. His performance in a debate in June was particularly poor, leading to more calls for him to step down.

What Happens Next?

With Biden out, the Democrats need to pick a new nominee. Delegates will choose the nominee either during a virtual roll call in early August or at the convention in Chicago next month.
