(Washington D.C.) President Joe Biden has decided not to run for president again in 2024. Instead, he is supporting Vice President Kamala Harris to be the next Democratic nominee. If Harris becomes the nominee, she would be the first Black woman and the first Asian American to lead a major political party.
This important endorsement came after weeks of problems within the Democratic Party. Many Democrats were worried after Biden did not do well in a recent debate. They questioned if he could win another term and lead the country for four more years. Because of this, Biden decided to end his campaign.
Harris is the natural choice to take Biden's place because she is already his vice president. She would take over his large campaign team and funding. Recent polls show that she does better against former President Donald Trump than Biden and other possible Democratic candidates.
Some people might try to pick another candidate for 2028, but this could upset Harris's supporters and many Black Democrats. However, Harris has been getting a lot of praise from Democrats recently, especially after Biden's debate performance.
During her time as vice president, Harris has faced many challenges. She has worked on difficult issues like voting rights and immigration. One effort to improve voting rights did not pass in Congress. On immigration, she was criticized by the right for not visiting the border and by the left for telling migrants not to come to the U.S.
Last year, some Democrats were worried that negative opinions about Harris could hurt the campaign. They urged the party to support her more. In the weeks after Biden's debate, Harris has become more comfortable in her role. She has been a strong voice for Biden's campaign, especially on issues like reproductive health.
Harris's supporters believe that much of the criticism against her is due to racism and sexism. They say that people are now starting to see the qualities in Harris that her supporters have always seen.
