Lafayette, LA – Thursday morning, the Lafayette Police Department SWAT Team helped the Jeanerette City Marshals Office with a hostage situation in Jeanerette, LA. The incident began when the Jeanerette City Marshals Office tried to serve an arrest warrant for a suspect with multiple warrants. They asked for help from the Lafayette SWAT Team due to a mutual aid agreement for emergencies.

During the operation, the suspect fired several shots at law enforcement. Four Lafayette Police Officers were injured. Two officers were shot, and two were hit by bullet fragments.

All injured officers were taken to a hospital. Three are in good condition with non-life-threatening injuries, but sadly, one officer was killed in the line of duty.

The suspect, now identified as 31-year-old Nyjal Hurst, was inside of a home located in the 2500 Block of Martin Luther King Drive. Nyjal was wanted by the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office for attempted first-degree murder in a drive-by shooting. Court records also show he was arrested in Lafayette Parish in July 2023 for numerous charges including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The Lafayette Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own. They ask for prayers for the officers and their families during this difficult time.

Lafayette Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet issued the following statement. “I am deeply saddened to share the news of the recent loss of one of our cherished community members and a devoted officer of the Lafayette Police Department. This rare and tragic event brings us great sadness and grief. Our hearts go out to the officer’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.
