“I stand before you today to proudly announce I am now, officially, the Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” Harris declared at the rally in Philadelphia. “And so, now we got some work to do. We need to move to the general election and win that.”
The Democratic National Committee announced on Monday that Harris won the presidential nomination, making her the first Black woman and first Asian American to lead a major-party ticket. According to the DNC, Harris secured 99% of the vote.
Under party rules, Harris had the authority to select her running mate without a separate vote.
Harris Explains Her Choice of Walz as Running Mate
Vice President Kamala Harris explained her decision to choose Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate in the 2024 presidential election.
“Since the day that I announced my candidacy, I set out to find a partner who can help build this brighter future, a leader who will help unite our nation and move us forward, a fighter for the middle class, a patriot who believes as I do in the extraordinary promise of America,” Harris stated at the rally in Philadelphia.
She described Walz as “more than a governor,” highlighting his experience as a high school football coach, which she believes will aid his ability to serve as vice president.
“He saw the potential in kids who sometimes didn’t even see it in themselves,” Harris said, noting that Walz led his team from a winless record to the school’s first state championship.
Harris praised Walz as “the kind of teacher and mentor that every child in America dreams of having,” saying he inspired people to “dream big” and made them “feel like they belong.”
“That’s the kind of vice president he will be,” she concluded.
Harris Emphasizes the Fight for the Future
Kamala Harris, the official Democratic nominee for president, emphasized that her campaign is not just about defeating former President Donald Trump but also about securing the future.
“I know Donald Trump’s type,” Harris said, to loud cheers from the crowd. “This campaign, our campaign, it’s not just a fight against Donald Trump. Our campaign, this campaign, is a fight for the future.”
She stated her commitment to affordable housing, healthcare, and childcare.
“We fight for a future where we bring down prices that are still too high and lower the cost of living for American families so that they have the chance not just to get by but to get ahead,” she said.
Standing behind her, Governor Tim Walz applauded. This event marked the first time Harris and Walz appeared together.
She reiterated her search for “a partner who can help build this brighter future” and introduced Walz to the audience as that partner.
Harris Calls Democrats "The Underdogs"
Vice President Kamala Harris told an enthusiastic crowd in Philadelphia that Democrats, despite their energy, have a challenging road ahead to win in November.
“Listen, we also need to level set,” Harris said as the crowd cheered. “We are the underdogs in this race, but we have the momentum, and I know exactly what we are up against.”
